Once long ago (back in the late '80's) I worked with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy state office in Ohio. This national organization is committed to turning abandoned rail corridors (and other linear corridors) into greenways (including walking and biking trails). They're a wonderful organization that is a very effective advocate, and now they're alerting supporters that Congress is scheduled to vote TOMORROW (that is, July 22) to eliminate the "transportation enhancement" funds that help to support this kind of development. Given how much we spend every year on highway construction and maintenance, the small pittance that goes to such projects is the least we can do. Call your congresspeople and tell them to support the transportation enhancements! You can get more info about this specific issue here.
