Stories from the protests in NYC

Here's coverage you won't find in major newspapers, but that is important nonetheless. It's a story in Salon.com (sorry for the ads you have to watch to read it for free) about the roughness of the police in NYC amidst the multiple demonstrations against the Republican convention. Hurray for the courageous people exercising their right to peaceful political dissent, and shame on those authorities (not all of them, but some) who shut down the process in very rough ways. The "right to peaceful political dissent" has nothing to do with hooliganism, loitering, blocking sidewalks, harassment or generally infringing on others' right to be left alone to get about their lives. These kooks were protesting everything under the sun (and doubtless some were protesting the sun). It's all very tiresome and there is nothing whatsoever admirable about it. The cops did a phenomenal job in maintaining civility and safety, and at least one was seriously injured for his efforts. They're heroes. These smelly, confused hippies, meanwhile, are not worth the time of day.
