GodBlogCon

Well, it appears that blogging within the Christian community has spread so substantially that there is now officially an entire convention devoted to it! Today marks the last day of "GodBlogCon" -- a convention being held at Biola University in La Mirada, California. It's very clear from the invited speakers list that this is a highly conservative version of Christian blogging, and it makes me ponder yet again how easily conservative Christianity picks up on new media, and how slowly progressive Christianity does. What is that about? Posted by hessma at October 15, 2005 08:24 AM

Yes, indeed, Mary - what is this all about? It makes me think about my young adult sons. They are quite savvy regarding their faith tradition (Presbyterian) and adept at forming challenging questions to adults, as well as their peers. But, they have little use for attending formal youth group functions, worship services or adult ed aimed at the issues concerning them. Instead, they take their questions & thoughts to other venues, mostly the web (including places like myspace.com) Here, to their friends and to strangers responding to their blogs, they have faith conversations using new media. And, they certainly aren't conservative! They have picked up on new media, but not through the institutional church they are most familiar with. Yet, come to think of it, I bet they would love to be in on organizing some kind of gathering along the lines of GodBlogCon, just so they could take the conversation to the next level. hmmmmmm - I wonder what that would look like? I am sure location and technology and the built environment would be as crucial to the design as speakers and content.
